HAWK Beacon

Installation of High-Intensity Activated CrossWalK (HAWK)
and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB)

The City of Morgan Hill is installing a new type of traffic control device to help make it safer and easier for bicyclists and pedestrians to cross busy streets without impeding traffic. The traffic control device is called a HAWK (High-Intensity Activated CrossWalK) Beacon. These devices will be located along Watsonville Road at the new trail crossing of the West Little Llagas Creek Trail between Calle Sueno and La Arboleda Way.

The HAWK beacon differs from other pedestrian signals because it requires vehicles to stop and acts as a stop light when lit, creating a safer environment than a standard crosswalk. Installation is anticipated to be completed in July, with the signals active beginning July 2023.

In addition to the new HAWK Beacons, three new crosswalks along the West Little Llagas Creek Trail will have Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) installed. There are several RRFBs located throughout the City. These beacons are pedestrian activated and use flashing lights adjacent to the crosswalks to inform cars of pedestrians crossing. The new RRFBs will be located at:

  • La Crosse Drive between Vineyard Boulevard and La Mirada Court
  • La Crosse Drive between Vineyard Boulevard and La Jolla Court
  • Middle Avenue between Monterey Road and Olive Avenue
