Traffic Delays in the Weeks Ahead:

-2020 Pavement Resurfacing Project:

Graham Contractors will be slurry sealing East Dunne Avenue from Monterey Road to Laurel Road on Monday, October 19th through Thursday, October 22nd. After East Dunne Avenue is completed, Graham Contractors will be slurry sealing Condit Road from East Dunne Avenue to the Ford Store on Friday, October 23rd. The slurry seal operations will be completed from 7:00am to 5:00pm. 

St. Francis Electric will be installing traffic loop detectors on Tennant Avenue from Vineyard Boulevard to Juan Hernandez Drive.

East Dunne’s work will include work within the intersections of Church, Depot, Butterfield, Walnut Grove, and Laurel. Condit’s work will include work at the intersection of East Dunne. For your safety, please travel through the work zones/detours carefully or utilize alternative routes and plan for extra travel time when traveling through the work zones. The City appreciates your cooperation and apologizes for any inconveniences while construction is underway as there will be some construction noise, minor inconveniences, and traffic delays during the work.   The above schedule is with conditions permitting and that the schedule is subject to change.

Locations for maintenance are selected based on Pavement Management Program (PMP) data, resident feedback and field observations from Street Maintenance crews. Residents and businesses in the impacted area will receive a notice from the contractor prior to work beginning in the area. Any parking restrictions will be posted on the affected streets a minimum of 72 hours prior to the operation.

-Downtown Public Spaces: The City of Morgan Hill is working with local businesses in the Downtown to allow business uses, such as restaurants, to expand onto sidewalks, parking spaces and other public spaces to meet the requirements of the Covid-19 Shelter in Place Order. There may be limited traffic control devices and construction work occurring on Monterey Road and adjacent side streets in the Downtown. For information contact Chris Ghione at

-Uvas Road Pavement Rehabilitation from Watsonville Road to Little Uvas Road: The County of Santa Clara’s Road and Airports Department is completing pavement rehabilitation work on Uvas Road Mondays through Fridays from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Construction is anticipated through the end of October 2020. -Main Avenue Bike Lane Sidewalk Project:  Traffic controls will remain in place at East Main Avenue and Grand Prix in order to construct the bulb outs and rapid flashing beacons. It’s the intent of the City of Morgan Hill and the contractors, McKim Corporation, to minimize all impacts to residents and businesses nearby. For your safety, please travel through the work zones/detours carefully or utilize alternative routes and plan for extra time when traveling through the work zones. The City appreciates your cooperation and apologizes for any inconveniences while construction is underway as there will be some construction noise, minor inconveniences, and traffic delays during the week. Virtual Community Meeting to Discuss Proposed Butterfield Park: 

-The City of Morgan Hill is in the process of planning a future park along Butterfield Boulevard at Monterey Road. There is a grant opportunity through the State Parks and Recreation Department to fund a major portion of the park. The City is holding a virtual meeting to discuss planning efforts to date, project details and obtain input from the community regarding potential park amenities. Major Projects:

-Madrone Channel Trail Project
Phase 1 improvements to the Madrone Channel Trail began on October 15, 2020. This is the first of a two-phase project to provide a paved trail along the Valley Water’s Madrone Channel. This trail runs along the east side of Highway 101 for approximately 2.9 miles. The first phase is approximately 1.1 miles and includes a 6 feet wide paved trail between Cochrane Avenue and Main Avenue. During the construction of this project from October 15 through the end of November, the Madrone Channel Trail will be closed from Cochrane Avenue to Main Avenue. Learn more about this project at This project is made possible by Valley Water through the Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program, MTC Transportation Development Act (TDA) grant and the VTA Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA) grant. 

-Citywide Sidewalk Art for Buy Local Campaign: The City is supporting local businesses by providing grants for place branding beautification projects to enhance public spaces. One of the grants has been awarded to a unique partnership between the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, non-profits, and local artist Nacho Moya, to create sidewalk art with over 30 sidewalk art “cards” throughout the city promoting the many assets Morgan Hill has to offer. The sidewalk squares will be painted in high foot traffic areas throughout downtown and shopping centers citywide serving as a reminder to patronize local businesses and enjoy the many local recreation and tourism activities our city offers. These painted squares will remain in place for one-year. -Magical Bridge Playground in Community Park: Construction on the Magical Bridge Playground in Community Park has begun. A portion of the Community Park trail and parking lot will be closed due to the construction. The contractor will be installing fencing around the project site and storage area. - Centennial Recreation Center (CRC) Expansion Project: Construction on the CRC Expansion project has resumed. The anticipated completion date is November 2020. This expansion will include the addition of a second group exercise studio and additional parking spaces on the East side of the facility. - Third Street Creek Park: Half of the park will be closed until further notice due to planned tree maintenance. Access to the park from Second Street is not available.  For more information contact Chris Ghione at

- Morgan Hill Library Addition Project: Construction on the Morgan Hill Library Addition project is substantially completed. This project added approximately 2,500 square feet of space to the library. 

- Sunsweet Development: Final punch list items are being completed. Fences have been taken down and sidewalks are open. The Sunsweet project is located on a 1.63-acre parcel on the southeast corner of the intersection of Depot St. and East Third St. The project is primarily four stories and consists of 83 apartments and 8,051 square feet of ground floor commercial space. The project is utilizing 83 of the 500 residential building allotments that were set aside for use in the downtown by the voters on May 19, 2009 (Measure A). Parking for the project will be provided below grade. 

-Evergreen Village Project: This development project is a new 20.43 acre commercial and retail center located at the southeast corner of Butterfield Boulevard and Cochrane Road. Contractor working on removing and replacing median curb on Cochrane Road between Sutter and Woodview.  Traffic controls in place 24 hours/7 days a week through Sunday, October 19th.

-Monterey and Cochrane Road Intersection: Final punch list items being completed.

- Boys Ranch and Jackson Well Rehabilitation Project: The Jackson Well #3 may require the installation of a chlorine contact tank before it can be put online. The well has been testing free of bacteria since April 2020. Should the well test positive again, the chlorine tank work will be bid and installed. 

- Hale Avenue Extension Project:   City Council certified the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) and adopted the Hale Avenue Plan Line on August 23, 2017. The Hale Avenue Extension Project is currently out to bid with bids due October 29, 2020. Construction is largely funded by VTA’s Measure B Program ($14.5M). The funding for the project was approved at the June 17, 2020 City Council Meeting. Construction may commence as early as February/March 2021.   Please find more information.

- Monterey Sewer Trunk Line to Gilroy Project: The project proposes to construct a new parallel sewer trunk line from the Harding/Highland intersection to Renz Road in Gilroy. Design plans have been reviewed by the stakeholders. The City presented the sewer alignment to the City of Gilroy on Monday, April 29, 2019, and the alignment was approved. The design will now be elevated to a 90% completion level and is expected to be complete in December 2020. Construction of the parallel sewer trunk is currently not funded.

-CRC Slide Structure and Pool Deck Projects: Completion of this project is necessary for ongoing structural integrity and safety.

Maintenance Activities:

During the Santa Clara County shelter in place directive, in order to minimize the inadvertent spread of COVID-19, only the following maintenance activities, deemed as essential services, will occur on a priority basis:


City owned and maintained parks, buildings and grounds are closed, with the play structures cordoned off with caution tape and all enclosed areas locked. However, limited resources do not allow for strict enforcement of the parks’ closures. Due to this, the minimum services that are provided for these areas are:

  • Trash Collection
  • Restroom Cleaning (2X/day)
  • Emergency calls
  • Restroom plumbing or lighting issues
  • Safety Issues
  • Tripping hazards
  • Holes in decomposed granite pathways
  • Trees or dangerous overhead hazards
  • Faulty irrigation or leaks
  • Vandalism
  • Weed abatement near wooden or other flammable barriers
  • No abatement for aesthetics
  • Rodent Control
  • Biweekly turf cutting and edging

NOTE: Privately owned parks, owned and maintained by private entities, such as Homeowners Associations (“HOAs”), are privately maintained and are the sole responsibility of the HOA, Property Manager, or responsible delegate of the owner/operator.


Essential services related to streets and storm systems will continue during the shelter in place order including:

  • Potholes and small asphalt repairs deemed as safety concerns to motorists, vehicles, pedestrians or property
  • Sidewalk trip hazards
  • Emergency response, repairs and clean-up related to vehicle accidents
  • Road Iron repairs
  • Loose manholes, valve covers, etc.
  • Road markings
  • Refreshing of existing road markings
  • Right of way (ROW) weed abatement related to fire prevention or vehicle/pedestrian visibility
  • No abatement for aesthetics
  • Streetlight repairs/replacements
  • Street tree maintenance on emergency basis
  • Safety related issues
  • Clearance trimming for emergency vehicles
  • Storm drain repairs and service
  • Scheduled street sweeping (Contracted Service)
  • Emergency street sweeping (City Crew)
  • Infrastructure visibility
  • Replace damaged, faded or missing street signs
  • Median island painting and reflectors
  • Dead end and property barriers repair, painting, and reflector replacements
  • Visibility Weed/Vegetation Abatement
  • Open space fire weed abatement performed via contract services
